Regarding the way Sunday played out, the only gamble Phish is willing to take in regards to their concerts (music aside) is booking some shows at a casino. We live in such a litigious society and management companies (as “Corporate” as they may be) are the only way events like this will ever take place because they mitigate risk for the artist in the event that something goes wrong. These companies are risk averse, so situations like a “secret set” will never again be “secret” because they cannot risk 40k people scrambling, nay stampeding, to a dark nether region of the festival grounds in the middle of the night to watch Phish repelling out of helicopters into large vats of glow stick ink while playing their instruments. Hence the reason Trey announced it.

With them (these management companies) come things like severely expensive food and drink and potentially disgruntled (and minimally trained) gig workers. And it’s all about the bottom line, reduced cost and maximum profits.

So Sunday played out like it did, as did much of the weekend, but that’s the only way that an event like this takes place. The time will come when we, as well as the band, need to weigh our options (5 lbs) and determine if a four night stand (such as Dicks or Mexico) is the better alternative to the festival experience. Mondegreen certainly was the hybrid of the two. And to be clear, I don’t have an opinion either way, but as I get older, beds, bedding, and a warm shower are certainly preferred.

Anyway, thanks for your recap, appreciate your perspective on the event and the music. And thank you to everyone who has recapped a show this summer. This is such an amazing community.

Thank you for saying what I was trying to say so much better than I could. Overall, I am very glad I went and had a great time. 3 of the 4 shows were absolutely peak Phish. I live in an area with a lot of thunderstorms (NC) and I play golf, so I'm pretty adept at following projected radars and forecasted storms. Additionally, I talked with a meteorologist Saturday night who was camping near a friend, and he said that it most likely wasn't necessary to move the Sunday show...it may need to be delayed by an hour or two, but the systems were small and quick-moving. My wife is an MD, and she was very concerned with the condition of many concert-goers on Sunday who were exhibiting symptoms of severe heat-related illness. The decision to move the show was 100% motivated by money. If they kept the show time at 6:30, there was a chance that they would have to evacuate the grounds before or during the first set and not be able to resume the show. However, the most likely scenario was: grounds evacuated at 5 or 5:30, grounds re-open at 8 or so, and show starts at 9. In most years, that wouldn't have been an issue. BUT, because single day tickets were sold and they picked a venue with a curfew, they may not have been able to get a "full" one-set show in. The other gripe I had is that they shut down the grounds and declared them permanently closed. There was no reason for the festival grounds to be closed after 7pm, except for the fact that AEG wanted to save money. It was additionally rotten that they closed showers and services before the campgrounds were closed. As I said, I give Phish an A+ 5-stars for what they did last weekend. I give AEG about a C- and 2-stars.
