MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 236

And then there was one. Welcome to MJM Week 236, the tenth and final week of our Hall of Champions Series, Volume I. We welcome Emeritus Champion @schvice into the recording studio, where he has picked out this week's theme and tracks, all for your listening pleasure. @schvice recently gained Emeritus status, after winning his seventh MJM in Week 232, when he successfully navigated a challenging Gamehendge-based course set by @mcgrupp81. Where once he was the bane of the Blog, foiling themes and jams thought unsolvable, now @schvice has (thankfully) gone to the Dark Side, hoping that he can lead the Blog to that elusive victory number 17. Only one way to find out: let it rip.

To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips, and answer what they share in common. Each person gets one attempt per day, with the second “day” starting after the Blog posts the hint -- each answer should contain three songs / dates, along with the commonality between them. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive one MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck!

Hint:

Answer: It took a well-crafted triplet and a creative hint from the 10th and most recent MJM Emeritus @schvice, but for only the 17th time in 236 attempts, the Blog snags the W! As some users noted, the title of the video used for the hint is Mike Reed plays Groove Holmes' 1966 "Misty" up-tempo, on the Hammond Organ [emphasis mine]. The keen observer will note that the title is a play on "Mike's Groove," and the Mike in the video is certainly grooving along to the 50 year old tune; but even more fitting is the song played: "Misty." Fans well-versed in Phish's early material may recall that "I Am Hydrogen" has seldom-spoke lyrics that were used a half dozen times in the early days: "I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever." This week's "Mike's Groove" MJM consists of the 4/29/93 Weekapaug Groove, the 4/24/87 I Am Hydrogen, and the 7/12/96 Mike's Song. We'd like to once again thank @schvice and all of the MJM Emeriti for participating and crafting these awesome MJMs, and we hope to keep them involved and leverage their expertise in other ways in the future. Tune back in on Monday, when @ucpete takes over as your helping friendly host, and keep your eyes and ears peeled for some new tweaks in how the MJM is run. It has not escaped our notice that the multiclip format may be a turn-off to the unintiated, so expect a mix of classic single-clip MJMs, meta-puzzles, and other MJM shenanigans to take the sting out of Monday for everyone!

Special Thanks: I'd like to thank @ucpete for letting me be the Invisible Hand behind MJM for the past 10 weeks, helping each Emeritus Champion with crystalizing a theme, fine tuning the jam track samples, concocting the hint, and generally ensuring that the process runs smoothly. I had a blast getting to know each Emertitus Champion, and these guys, all ten, are not only great guys, but they really, really know their Phish. Thanks again @ucpete for handing the keys over and letting me take the cruise ship out for an extended journey. It was a great ride, but all good things must end, and with today's Emeritus/Blog victory (nice MJM @schvice!), I commend the MJM controls back to your good care. Enjoy what's left of summer everyone. DFB.

andrewrose No clue, but Trey sure sounds like Jerry on that second clip..

officercookies lol came in to say the 2nd one sounds like dead.

ceevee Tip (not a hint at the answer, but for playing): If you'd like to be able to scroll through the track, press play to cue up the track and then you can right click and open in a new tab or download. Opening in a new tab (or downloading) will give you a version that you can pause, rewind, and fast-forward. Note: this option to open in a new tab or download is only presented (in chrome, at least) once the track has been cued up by pressing play.

First of all, on my computer, I can always pause / play / rewind the MJM. I keep hearing more and more people having issues though. Second, you can always download the MJM, no matter what browser you're using, simply by viewing the web page's source code and ctrl-f'ing "mp3". This is what you see if you do it on today's MJM:

http://smedia.pnet-static.com/audio/MJM-236.mp3 />
Third, as not many folks feel comfortable viewing the page source, I've been trying to remember to add download links to each week's MJM, so I'll add the one above right now. Sorry for forgetting this week! And finally, I'll see if we can take a look at the audio-playing code to see what the heck's going on -- it's just supposed to work.

Piper72 Not even going to attempt, but just wanted to comment on that video...my GOD! He just sat down and played that??? I mean, just watch the guy's left foot!!

zipriderson Yes, sick video for sure. What this has to do with the MJM I have no idea.
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose Me neither. As for the hint, Trey refers to Page as 'Richard Groove Holmes' during the 5/15/88 Harpua, but couldn't track down any jams from that show that match.

johnnyd Veeeeerrry interesting.
Just last saturday, I was playing records out at a bar. At one point I played "Groove Holmes" by the Beastie Boys -> "Groove's Groove" by Richard Groove Holmes.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN???

(second clip sounds like a "With" ;)
(You guys and girls keep working your magic...)
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose And Groove Holmes by the Beastie Boys came out in 1992 which is the same year that Page got his Hammond B3! I got nuthin.

Is the theme jams from shows played in Philly with Simpsons secret language??

*Soooo* close!

Just overthink it a little more and you'll have it!
, comment by ekstewie1441
ekstewie1441 I listened to all versions of Bouncing today and can report none of the jams come from that song.

That's about how far I've gotten on this.
, comment by drshaws
drshaws I've listened to all the early Curtain Withs, hunting for the 2nd track, hoping it would lead me to somehow get an aha moment when combined with the clue.

But I got zilch. I do always appreciate the challenge, and the personal surprises that get unearthed when attempting to beat the Blog.

Ha! You should see the original MJM that I planned out, but that they thought would be too difficult.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure they were right.

mcgrupp81 I came for the MJM but stayed for the hint. Oh how I could entertain myself if I had that man's ability.
, comment by drshaws
drshaws I am so flustered. Was hoping a night's sleep and a new day would lead to something (well, that and needing to do real work getting in the way).

All I can think of is that the theme has to do with versions of songs/jams that are very tempo different than what we're used to (per the hint, of Misty getting sped up).

I had gone down that path yesterday too. Failed.
, comment by zipriderson
zipriderson The first one sounds a look like a Twist to me. Sounds like the same key, and they sort of fall back into the progression at the end of this clip. Of course this would have nothing to do with a Mike's Groove, or a slowed down or faster version of anything. . i think. .
, comment by HarborSeal
HarborSeal Got the first clip quickly; could not get any others, and could not figure out the hint. Alas.
, comment by bushwood_a_dump
bushwood_a_dump Great hint (if you are the blog)...

More of an anti-hint, considering the multiple armchair theories it was spun up in my mind.

First clip does sound Twist-y, I believe I hear a China boy cymbal splash from Fish in the second clip that would date it cleanly pre-92, third clip, no clue.

Either way, when I get home tonight, I'm definitely going to dig out my vinyl copy of 'Soul Message', by Richard Groove Holmes, and give it a good spin.

Best of luck contestants; curious to see how this one goes!
, comment by stillwaitin
stillwaitin I'm stumped. I'm thinking the hint could have to do with jazz standards. I'm also wondering if it could have to do with Phil Lesh, since half the band is playing with him this weekend. The 2nd clip sounds very dead-like.

Good luck! I'm done trying with this one.

uctweezer We're going to call this in about 10 minutes or so, or as long as it takes me to finish the write-up. Hurry up or shut it down!

bushwood_a_dump The David Bowie's where 'Misty Mountain Hop' was teased:

5-12-92
12-11-92
4-8-94

At least I wasn't grasping at straws.

andrewrose I was scanning early Mike's and Hydrogens and Weekapaug's this morning, but too little too late. Nice work getting a win for the blog @schvice. What happens next week?

Thanks! You were getting close...I really thought you might pull it off.

Big thanks to @uctweezer and @Dog_Faced_Boy for allowing me to host one of these! The MJM is one of the cooler things that happens here on .net -- how many other bands would donate a free download code to the winner of a silly weekly quiz on a fan-run website that isn't even directly affiliated with the band? Pretty cool when you think about it.

I could never keep up with the usual hosts, with all the jams and theme ideas they've got in the bank, but as long as I've known about the MJM, I've always imagined it would be fun to host one. So thanks again to them, and to all of you for playing!

Cheers,
Pete

Thabigsnoop Dag y'all, hint sent me looking at shows including both a mike's groove and mountains in the mist.

Not quite the right direction!

In consideration of the fact that Mike from the hint was playing a cover of a cover, I was also looking for jammed-out cover tunes played between Mike's and Weekapaug.

I like how the hint demands relatively obscure trivia about the band's history. Cool stuff yo

This.

It's just fantastic. Great puzzle. Still bummed I couldn't connect the Hydrogen dots to this - let alone target a standalone Hydrogen (which should be noted is slightly off from the hint, but I'll let it slide). Tuesday I had been looking in just Mike's - when was the last time I listened to 8/27/1987? couldn't tell you, but glad I listened Tuesday, and again yesterday. Thanks again!

Next week I'm back in the driver's seat, but it won't be in the triple + theme format -- in fact, it'll be an MJM format you've never seen before. That's all I'll say for now regarding next week, but I will say that in the coming months, you'll see a variety of MJM formats all based on the fundamental premise that a Phish jam is the answer. While I think the triple + theme is fantastic, I do worry that we are scaring off n00bs and passers-by, so while the multi clip format will still be used frequently, we'll have a number of other contests that anyone will have a chance at winning.

@schvice: Silly? This shit is serious business! ;)

@drshaws: We thought about the standalone Hydrogen being sneaky, but decided it actually makes more sense this way. The title of that video says Mike... Groove... Misty. Misty, or the bonus Hydrogen allusion, doesn't fall between Mike and Groove, just like that '87 Hydrogen doesn't fall in a Mike's Groove! Plus, one needn't have realized the Misty -> Hydrogen connection to get that this is a Mike's Groove theme, and we figured folks might start checking early Hydrogena irrespective of their setlist locations. Iif someone had gone chronologically or read the Hydrogen song history (which talks about the early Curtain With-esque jam that used to follow early Hydrogens), they wouid have found this one in a heartbeat.
